The world of disability was not uncommon to Keng Joo. His father, Raymond, was himself a disabled sportsperson with polio. But even Raymond was taken aback by Keng Joo’s reaction when he was diagnosed with bone cancer at the tender age of 12 and had to lose his leg. Raymond recalled Keng Joo saying: “It can’t be helped. If I have to lose my leg, at least I will still have one good leg and that is still better than you, Dad.”

Understanding that sporting is a useful route to integration, Keng Joo’s father took him to the Singapore Disability Sports Council. From then on, there was no turning back. Keng Joo earned medal after medal at numerous regional and international games. The honour and pride he experienced when donning Singapore’s national colours were indescribable. Keng Joo
