Medal Tally on First Day of ASEAN Para Games 2005

5 Gold, 4 Silver & 4 Bronze Medals for Singapore on the first day of the 3rd ASEAN Para Games 2005

Singapore has collected 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 4 Bronze medals on the first day of competition at the 3rd ASEAN Para Games (APG) which is currently being held in Manila, Philippines.

The ASEAN Para Games is the equivalent of the SEA Games and Singapore has sent a contingent of 30 athletes to compete in the Track and Field, Swimming and Wheelchair Tennis events. One thousand and twenty-five athletes representing the 11 ASEAN countries in 10 sports will be participating in the Games. It is the largest and the most important disability sports event in the region.

In the Track & Field events, Muhammad Firdaus Bin Nordin, 17, who suffers from Spina Bifida, won a Gold medal in the 200m sprint in a new APG record time of 27.61 seconds. Veteran Azman Bin Yusof won a Silver Medal for his efforts in the Category T36 200m sprint and Nazariah Bin Ahmadini won a bronze in the women’s equivalent of the same event.

Our Swimmers did us proud at RSMC Swimming Stadium when they won 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. Golden-girl Ms Theresa Goh broke her own 2003 record on the way to clinching her first Gold medal of this APG. Her achievements were matched by her compatriots Ms Ng Xiu Zhen and Ms Sharon Wong Sze Ting, who triumphed in the S7 and S14 categories respectively. Mr Wong Meng Ee rounded off the Gold Medal haul for our swimmers.

Mr Lim Keng Joo, Ms Tan Lee Juan and Ms Yvonne Tham Pei Yan won Silver Medals for the 100m Freestyle events in their respective categories while Mr James Leow Chen Hai, Mr Lin Rixin and Mr Tan Chin Siang won Bronze medals for the same event, in their respective categories.
