Official Send-Off Ceremony for 3rd ASEAN Para Games
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports will be the Guest-of-Honour at the Official Send-Off Ceremony for the 3rd ASEAN Para Games at 12pm in Changi Airport Terminal 2 on Monday, 12th December 2005.
The 3rd ASEAN Para Games will take place in Manila, Philippines from 12th to 21st December 2005. Thirty outstanding disabled athletes will be representing Singapore at the Games in 4 sports.
The ASEAN Para Games is a biennial sporting event for the disabled. It is a top-level sports event of equal value to that of the SEA Games. The Singapore contingent aims to surpass the medal tally of 19 medals (10 gold, 8 silver and 1 bronze) won at the last Para Games with a projected haul of 38 medals.
Of the 30 athletes representing Singapore, 10 will be competing in athletics, 2 in wheelchair tennis and 16 in swimming events. SDSC will also be sending, for the very first time, 2 sailors to the Games. Sailing is making its debut as a demonstration sport.
One thousand and twenty-five athletes representing the 11 ASEAN countries will be participating in the Games. A total of 10 competitive sports will be offered in Manila. They include Athletics, Badminton, Powerlifting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis, Judo, Goalball and Chess.
