4th National Disability Games to hold 1st Ever Silent Badminton Competition
The National Disability Games (NDG) will commence over the weekend from 30th September till 2nd October 2005 to showcase the wide variety of disabled sports with around 300 participants. This year the NDG has incorporated a total of 9 sports: archery, bowling, street soccer, sailing, tennis, basketball, equestrian, lawn bowling, goal ball and badminton.
This is the first time Singapore Disability Sports Council is hosting a badminton championship for the hearing-impaired athletes, from which we hope athletes would be selected to qualify for the Asia Pacific Deaf Games 2007 and Deaflympic Games 2009.
Besides the 21 affiliates that would be attending, around 80 youth volunteers from 4 major volunteers group: Singapore Soka Association, Singapore Association for the Deaf, Nee Soon Central Youth Executive Committee and Eunos Constituency Sports Club, are assisting us through the event, from the planning, organizing to helping out at the games itself.
Due to a huge involvement of the youths in this year’s event, we hope to encourage more interaction and integration amongst the able-bodied and disabled. At the same time, giving more exposure and awareness to the new generation about disability sports.
The NDG has been a multi sports opportunity for the disability community since 2002. It allows the disabled athletes to compete against each other, test their own limits and gain competitive experience. It also picks out talented sportspersons for recruitment into further development.
The majority of the games (badminton, basketball, street soccer and tennis) would be held on Sunday, 2nd October 2005 at NUS Sports & Recreation Centre, 9am – 3pm, and the NDG will also have the closing ceremony on the same day.
