Rotary Club of SUNTEC City Commemorates Centennial Celebrations with Donation of New Van to Singapore Disability Sports Council
Sports for the disabled form the very cornerstone of the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC)’s existence. SDSC’s goal is to promote, through sports, the well-being of the disabled in Singapore, helping them to live full and independent lives.
One of the most difficult and persistent challenges to the promotion of our disability sports programmes for both junior and adult athletes has been the transportation problem. With the burgeoning number of disabled persons participating in our programmes, SDSC is trying its utmost best to accommodate & cater to all types of disabilities.
Guest-of-Honour Mr Charles Chong, Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris – Punggol GRC will unveil the new van at a special handing-over ceremony on:
Date: Wednesday, 23rd February 2005
Venue: The Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore (Cerebral Palsy Centre), 65 Pasir Ris Drive 1, Singapore 519529
Time: 10.00am to Noon
Many a times, our disabled individuals, especially the younger ones who are wheel-chair bound, find commuting from one place to another both costly and inconvenient. Due to the transport problems, our athletes encounter difficulties in getting to their training venues thereby negating their training in terms of both quality and quantity.
To this end, we are extremely grateful to the members of the Rotary Club of SUNTEC City Singapore who have come forward to generously donate a specially fitted van which will undoubtedly help to alleviate our transport problem. The donation of the van is part of the fund-raising project of the Rotary Club of SUNTEC City Singapore to commemorate its Centennial Celebration which falls on 23rd February 2005.
Equipped with all the necessary sports equipment, the new van together with our Sports Development Officers will travel to mainstream schools, institutions & specially selected organisations to introduce and conduct public education programmes as well as organising simple sporting activities for the disabled groups. In so doing, it also helps to raise awareness of our disability sports to able-bodied members of the public. With the acquisition of the new van, SDSC now has 3 vans to help achieve that objective.
As part of social integration, members from the Rotary Club of SUNTEC City Singapore will be playing a game of boccia with our junior athletes at the van-handing over ceremony. Boccia is a sport whose origin dates back to ancient times. It first appeared on the Paralympic Games (Olympic equivalent for the disabled) in 1984. Today, it is one of the fastest growing Paralympic sports and also a very meaningful and healthy sport for the disabled.
