SELECTION TRIALS BEGIN IN MAY FOR THE HIGHEST LEVEL SPORTS EVENT AFTER THE PARALYMPICS - FESPIC GAMES 2006
As we sober up from our celebrations for the Melbourne Commonwealth wins, the time has come again to prepare for dazzling performances by Singapore in the two most important Games remaining in 2006 – the FESPIC Games in Kuala Lumpur and the Asian Games in Doha.
The FESPIC Games is one of the highest level competitions for athletes with a disability, ranking just after the Paralympics. In the previous 2002 FESPIC Games, Singapore brought home 3 golds, 2 silvers and 4 bronzes.
This year, the FESPIC Games will take place in the buzzing capital of Malaysia from 25 November to 1 December. Singapore intends to send its largest contingent to participate in swimming, athletics, sailing, boccia, wheelchair tennis, powerlifting, archery, lawn bowls, soccer, bowling and wheelchair basketball.
A series of selection trials will be held from 22 May onwards to select only the most outstanding as Singapore’s representatives in this prestigious event. Registration for preliminary selection trials is from 8 May to 19 May.
If athletes would like to check out more information on registration and selections or download the registration package, the information and package can be accessed easily via the Singapore Disability Sports Council website: http://www.sdsc.org.sg/
About FESPIC Games 2006
“Equality in Sports and Life” is the theme of KL 2006 9th FESPIC Games.
Some 4000 elite athletes from over 40 countries in the Far East and South Pacific countries are expected to participate this year. Singapore intends to send approximately 100 athletes for various competitions, more than twice the number of the 2002 contingent.
The objectives of the 9th FESPIC Games are:
1. Complete acceptance and rights of equality for persons and athletes with disabilities in the society
2. Lay a foundation for the development of sports and recreation for persons with disabilities.
3. Encourage the disabled in their determination for rehabilitation, and to contribute to the improvement of social perspective towards the disabled.
4. To contribute, on an international level to the mutual friendship and cooperation among the disabled.
The 9th FESPIC Games is not only significant because of the elite standard of international competition, but also because it will be the last FESPIC Games ever. The Games will assume a new name of ‘Asian Para Games’ in 2010.
