500 million people in the world are disabled - roughly one in ten.

Did you know....
3rd December is International Day of Disabled Persons.

International Day of Disabled Persons, proclaimed as a collaborative effort by the United Nations, celebrates and acknowledges the experiences and capabilities of people with disabilities.

Did you know....
Eating a handful of green vegetables every day would have been enough to save the eyesight of 250,000 children who go blind every year because of a lack of Vitamin A in their diets.

Did you know....
War and violence are among the main causes for disability. An estimated 100,000 Cambodians have become disabled as a result of landmines.

Did you know....
Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers for the Disabled is a national non-profit organization in America serving quadriplegics and other people with severe spinal cord injuries or mobility-impairments by providing highly trained monkeys to assist with daily activities. As live-in companions, the monkey helpers provide 20-30 years of service, bringing the gifts of independence, companionship, dignity and hope to the people they help.

The first guide dogs were trained by the German government to assist war-blinded WWI veterans.

Did you know....
Organized sport for persons with physical disabilities developed out of rehabilitation programs. Following the Second World War, in response to the needs of large numbers of injured ex-service members and civilians, sport was introduced as a key part of rehabilitation. In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttman organized the first sports competition for wheelchair athletes in the Stoke Mandeville Games which evolved into the modern Paralympic Games.

Over 100 million people are currently disabled as a result of malnutrition - that’s one in five.

Did you know....
Blind and deaf since the age of two, Helen Keller was an American legend who learnt to read and write from her blind teacher - Anne Sullivan - and eventually became the first deaf and blind person to earn a college degree. She graduated from Radcliffe College, with honors, in 1904.

Did you know....
Presbycusis (age-related hearing loss) affects two thirds of Americans over 65 years of age.
