Towards our nation’s ideal - 47th National Interschool Swimming Championship

Disabled swimmers were invited to showcase their abilities at the 47th National Interschool Swimming Championship held at Toa Payoh Swimming Complex on 12 July. This was the first time that a local national championship had integrated events for the disabled. Needless to say, it was a exhilarating experience for the disabled athletes, SDSC staff and crowd who attended the event.

“The atmosphere was electrifying,” commented Andy Neo, our SDSC sport administrative assistant who attended the event with the team.

If it was electrifying for our staff, one can hardly imagine how the disabled swimmers felt of the event. Over so many years, there have been few, other than those already affiliated with disability, who have cheered them on as they competed in international events, let alone local and regional events. To have the whole complex full of supporters cheering for them, could this be the start to realization of a Singapore ideal? The road to integration?

Never mind that it was not a competitive event they took part in. The disabled swimmers clearly enjoyed themselves as for once, they did not have to fight or pressure themselves to earn that applause.
