Realizing the Olympic Dream

By Yeo Jing Wei

Proudly organized by Student Volunteer Corps (SVC), the event showcased the celebration of the Ability Challenge Disability Sports Festival, a mini concert and a carnival. Guest performers including Campus Superstar Ng Chee Yang, and the APSC synchronized swimming team helped bring up the hype of the event.

It was definitely heartening to see so many volunteers and spectators come to support the Challenge. Some volunteers manned the carnival booths while others came to help in the 5000 Laps Olympic Dream Challenge. The Challenge aimed to have volunteers swim 5000 laps to raise funds and bring awareness towards volunteerism in Singapore. 20 percent of funds raised would be channeled towards supporting disabled athletes who are preparing for Paralympics 2008, and the other 80 per cent would go towards developing SVC’s youth volunteerism programmes.

Guest-of-honour MP Teo Ser Luck (Parliamentary Secretary of Community Development, Youth and Sports), Ms Yeo Siew Mui (President of SVC), and Mr Ang Peng Siong were some of the VIPs who swam 10 laps each, playing an active role in helping SVC achieve the 5000 laps target. Even after the VIP swimmers had finished the required laps, most continued swimming to show their firm support for the worthy occasion. They truly are role-models for the rest to follow.

Thanks to all the participants and guests of this event, we realized the dream to create a 5,000 lap record.
