“There they are!”
Our welcoming party finally saw the team of three emerge from the crowd at the arrival gate of Changi Terminal 1. Although it was already late at night, every sleepy head perked up. Everyone started to wave their little Singapore flags enthusiastically to welcome the trio who had just gone through a rigorous flight plan to return home.
Then, it became a flurry of images, as families reunited amidst emotional hugs. The strong bonding shared amongst the family members is something hard to miss. A proud father hugged his daughter when she returned with a world record for Singapore. And a son jumped into the arms of his father upon his return from a faraway land.
After the hugs and kisses amongst the family members, MP Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Community Development, Youths and Sports, - a member of the welcoming party - stepped forward to congratulate the athletes for their outstanding efforts shown in the US Paralympics National Championships 2006. A patient and amiable person, Mr Teo had conversed animatedly with the families of Theresa and Keng Joo and the athletes themselves. He also said that he just had to come to welcome them back despite the late hours as he was extremely proud of their achievements for Singapore. It was a kind gesture which was deeply appreciated by the Singapore Disability Sports Council and had planted smiles on the returning contingent and their families.
Mr Tan Ju Seng, President of SDSC, and Mr Kevin Wong, Executive Director of SDSC, were also at the airport to welcome the contingent back.
After being nearly blinded by numerous camera flashes, Theresa, Keng Joo and Coach Ang were finally ushered back home by their families to begin their next conquest – jetlag.
