A Record Team of Disabled Athletes To Compete At The Last Historic FESPIC Games 2006

MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
08 September 2006

Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) will be fielding a record 41 disabled athletes to represent Singapore at the 9th Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC Games) 2006 – biggest multi-sports and multi-disability event for athletes with disabilities in Asia and Oceania – in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia held from 25 November to 01 December 2006 (list of shortlisted athletes here. ).

It will be a historic moment for these athletes and the contingent as it will be the last FESPIC Games ever since 1975, as it takes on a new name of ‘Asian Para Games’ in 2010, to reflect the move towards equal sport opportunities for both abled and disabled-bodies. As of 12 August 2006, around 2,300 athletes from 27 countries have confirmed their participation in the Games. Please click here to download a factsheet on the Games.

“Singapore’s medal tally at the last FESPIC Games in 2002 was three golds, two silvers and four bronzes. With greater emphasis on structured training and development for the athletes over the past years, I am confident that our athletes will surpass this achievement and do Singapore proud for the upcoming Games,” said Mr Kevin Wong, Executive Director of SDSC.

One of the selected athletes - our world record holder for swimming - Theresa Goh, also expressed her excitement for being shortlisted. She quipped, “I feel happy to be part of this memorable moment. I hope to see improvements in my timings and win medals for Singapore”.

A fundraising Relay Torch Run and CEO Regatta will be organized to raise funds to support our athletes’ participation at this last FESPIC Games. The disabled athletes and the contingent will be joining hands to complete the Relay Torch Run, which will start at River Valley Road and end at Marina bay where the Regatta will be launched. CEOs and top management executives are invited to be part of this historic moment together with their staff by donating a minimum amount of $5,000 per organisation.

The target for this fundraising event is to raise a total of $120,000 to cover the costs of the contingent’s entry fees, special transportation arrangements for the athletes, logistic costs, administrative costs, medical support and accommodation.
