SDSC’s new Archery programme takes off with a bull’s-eye

By Audris Woon

Have you ever wondered at the deftness of the archer-god Apollo, been wowed by the show-stopping stunts of Legolas, or simply been amused by the playfulness of Cupid’s love arrows? The charm of archery has indeed captivated many people, with its long history of 50,000 years. Today, this sport has transcended language, culture and physical barriers to be a sport that is enthusiastically pursued by people all over the world.

On 2nd September 2006, 5 keen athletes - Bay Meng Chien, Logoraj, Theresa Goh, Yip Pin Xiu and James Leow - who are avid learners and established sportspersons in the field of disability sports, embarked on their journey to uncover the wonders of archery. They gathered at Chestnut Drive Secondary School for their first archery lesson under the Archery Training Programme (Beginner/ Intermediate), organised by the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC).

Coach KR cheerily explaining to the new archers
The archers could hardly contain their excitement as the instructor, Mr. KR Letchumanan, cheerily explained the basics of archery. Shortly after, these eager learners earnestly followed his instructions and began exploring their new bows and equipment. After some clarification and last reminders, the archers were ready to go and headed to the field where the target boards awaited their arrival.

Aiming for that bulls eye During the shooting, the new archers demonstrated potential and dexterity, making remarkable progress as time passed. Despite their physical difficulties, the archers portrayed determination to make each shot their best. It was certainly heartening to see the improvements they made, and the high spirits spurred by the instructor’s continuous encouragement. Unfortunately, a sudden downpour put a disappointing stop to the session. But the day did end on a happy note with a bull’s-eye by Meng Chien during the last round of shooting, an impressive achievement by a beginner.

The love for sports is evident in these archers, who took up a new sport (i.e. archery) even as they continue excelling in other sports such as swimming. The journey for them does not end here, as they will continue training under this programme which takes place every Saturday, from 2pm onwards, at Chestnut Drive Secondary School.

This Archery Programme was made possible by the generous efforts and support of the principal of Chestnut Drive Secondary School, who offered to host the programme. If this partnership proves to be successful, archery will become the second collaborative effort between SDSC and Chestnut Drive Secondary, after boccia.

The Archery programme welcomes all newcomers and potential national representatives. If you are interested in learning archery or developing your skill further, please contact Mr Azarudin via email or call +65 6342 3561. We are also looking for more archery ranges and venue hosts. Interested venue hosts can also contact Mr Azarudin.
