In early September,

Assen became a hot spot as disabled athletes flew in from all parts of the world to attend the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships, one of the largest athletics events this year. Numerous world records were broken during the championships, as the best track and field athletes, including past Paralympians and renowned athletes like Marlon Shirley and Oscar Pistorius, congregated in town for this Beijing Paralympics 2008 qualifier. The Championships, otherwise acclaimed as “The Worlds”, also had some other memorable defining moments. Check out the following highlights:

  • China was the biggest winner of the Championships, clearly leading in the overall medal tally with 55 medals, including 22 gold medals. The rising dragon is definitely not one to be trifled with. USA and Australia came in second, on par with a total of 32 medals each, including 16 gold medals.
  • Despite a small contingent of four at the Games, Singapore finished with a silver medal in wheelchair racing.

  • Singapore's Firdaus won a silver medal

  • This was the first time the Championships was made accessible to sports fans all over the world – via the IPC’s Internet television channel. A total of 6 four-hour highlight programmes were shown.

The Internet television channel, launched at the Torino 2006 Winter Paralympics, drew in over 70,000 viewers from 105 countries, with a 5% increase of new viewers every day. This clearly demonstrated the interest and popularity of Paralympic sports.

  • During the championships, it was announced that the next IPC General Assembly has been awarded to Korea. Korea will be hosting the assembly in its capital – Seoul, from 17 to 18 November 2007. The government of Korea has also provided a financial guarantee for the 2007 IPC General Assembly, besides supporting the bid by the Korean National Paralympic Committee.
  • IPC Athletics has relaunched its website with a more up-to-date look and content. Visit the website to view pictures of the greatest blind runner of all time, Henry Wanyoke, and the fastest man with no leg – Oscar Pistorius.
