FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
14 November 2006
Seven disabled sailors from Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam will be leaving for the first-ever sailing event in the history of the Games.
Tomorrow, Team Singapore will send off its first batch of athletes to the KL ’06 9th Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC). Four disabled sailors will be departing from National Stadium at 7.30am with three other ASEAN sailors who have been training in Singapore for the past two weeks.
All seven sailors are leaving a week before the commencement of the Games to condition themselves to the weather and environment in Kuala Lumpur.
Singapore has been training three ASEAN sailors from Philippines and Vietnam with the help of the ASEAN Disability Sailing Federation’s (ADSF) intensive training program for the past two weeks, as part of a collaborative effort with the Federation to promote sailing excellence in the ASEAN region.
Besides providing the expertise to ASEAN, Singapore will also be contributing in the Games’ equipment needs - sending her fleet of 10 Access 2.3 dinghies to support the competition.
Both initiatives demonstrate a strong kick-off by the ASEAN Disability Sailing Federation, which only recently formed their headquarters in Singapore on 15 July this year to promote disability sailing in ASEAN region.
Twenty-year-old Jovin Tan, who is currently a student with ITE College East, is one of the local talents participating in the sailing events. Suffering from cerebral palsy has not deterred him from clinching an overall 2nd place in the Sailability Singapore Regetta held early this year.
Jovin and three other Singaporean disabled sailors - Desiree Lim Kok Liang, Abdul Karim Bin Din and Joanne Toh Soon, will be at the Flag Presentation Ceremony today at the ITE College East, Jovin’s alma mater. Prior to the ceremony, they will be there with the rest of the contingent for a phototaking session, which will unveil the new ceremonial attire the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) has prepared for the contingent.
The KL ’06 9th FESPIC Games 2006 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 25 November 2006 to 1 December 2006. The Games is the second-highest level multi-sports competitions in the Oceania and Asia Pacific region, ranking just after the Paralympics. It is the equivalent of the able-bodied’s Asian Games, which is being held in Doha, Qatar. Singapore is sending a total of 39 athletes to participate in six sports – athletics, boccia, lawn bowls, sailing, swimming and ten-pin bowling.
