Seven disabled sailors from Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam have left for Kuala Lumpur to participate in the first-ever sailing event in FESPIC Games.
Team Singapore sent off its first batch of athletes to the KL ’06 9th Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled (FESPIC) on 15 November 2006 (Wednesday). In order to condition themselves to the weather and environment of the competition venue, the local sailing team left a week earlier than the main contingent, together three other ASEAN sailors who began training in Singapore since two weeks before.

Singapore has been training the three sailors from Philippines and Vietnam with the help of the ASEAN Disability Sailing Federation’s (ADSF) intensive training program, to prepare them for the Games. The exchange training arrangements were made as part of a collaborative effort with the Federation to promote sailing excellence in the ASEAN region. |
Besides providing expertise to ASEAN neighbours, Singapore will also be contributing to the Games’ equipment needs, by sending a fleet of 10 Access 2.3 dinghies to support the competition.
Both initiatives demonstrate a strong kick-off by the ASEAN Disability Sailing Federation, which only recently formed its headquarters in Singapore on 15 July 2006 to promote disability sailing in ASEAN region. [Read more about formation of ASEAN Disability Sailing Federation here ]
