Team Singapore Sets Off to Challenge World Records at KL ’06 9th FESPIC Games

21 November 2006

On 22 Nov 2006, Singapore’s elite disabled athletes will set off to the KL ’06 9th FESPIC Games – an important preparatory Game for Singapore as we journey to Beijing 2008.

RADM (Ret) Kwek Siew Jin, PPA, President of National Council of Social Service, is the Guest-Of-Honour at the Send-Off Ceremony. We will be represented by Mr Ee Tiang Hwee, Honorary Secretary for the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC).

In this FESPIC Games, Singapore’s contingent of 39 athletes will be participating in a total of six sports - athletics, swimming, sailing, boccia, lawn bowl and bowling. This is the first time Singapore is participating in sailing, boccia, lawn bowl and bowling.

In the 2002 Busan FESPIC Games, only 10 athletes were fielded in two sports. The significant increase in Singapore’s qualifying athletes and participation in more sports hold testament to the encouraging growth of local disability sports. The growing standards of athletes also hint at the increasing possibility of scoring Singapore an Olympic medal at Beijing 2008 Paralympics.

The FESPIC Games is an important competition for elite athletes to spar with other elite sportspersons and find out aspects to improve and prepare in order to reach Beijing 2008’s standard. Almost 4000 athletes from 47 nations will be participating in the FESPIC Games, which is the highest level multi-sports competition for disabled athletes in the Asia and Oceania region, after the Paralympics.

Besides being an exciting experience for many of the new qualifying athletes, the KL ’06 9th FESPIC Games will also be a historic occasion for the whole contingent, as this will be the last FESPIC Games ever. In 2010, the FESPIC Games will take on a new name - ‘Asian Para Games’ - to reflect the move towards Equal Sport Opportunities for both able and disabled-bodies.

This is also the first time in a major Game that Team Singapore supporters will be able to cheer on their favourite athletes and be well-informed of their performance through SMS alert services and an SMS/MMS well-wishing campaign.
