MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
21 July 2007

The individual finals of the 1st Singapore Boccia Invitational Open 2007, held in the Jurong East Sports Hall, ended this afternoon with a Team Singapore athlete bagging the first place for the BC3 Individuals category.

Singaporean player Kevin Lee Yue Hong, won against Japanese athlete, Ms Ikoku Arai, with a score of 6 – 2 to claim first place. Kevin said that his win was unexpected as Hong Kong was supposed to be better at this sport.

However, Hong Kong swept most of the medals in the other Individual categories.

Ms Leung Mei Yee from Hong Kong claimed the first place in the BC1 Individuals category with a score of 6 - 3, winning fellow Hong Kong player, Mr Cheung Chun Ping.

Mr John Loung, another Hong Kong athlete, took first place in the BC2 Individuals category while Mr Leong Yuk Wing, also from Hong Kong, won the BC3 Individuals category.

Held for the first time in Singapore, this Boccia Invitational Open sees the participation of athletes from four countries – Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, presented the teams with a Merlion good luck soft toy with her well-wishes when she announced the championship open yesterday. The championship is organized by the Singapore Disability Sports Council and co-organized by the South West Community Development Council.

The finals for the pairs category will be played tomorrow, 22nd July, at the Jurong East Sports Hall. An awards ceremony will be held at Marriott Hotel tomorrow after the completion of the championship.
