MEDIA RELEASE
21 July 2007
The 35th National Track and Field Championship opened with a bang at Serangoon Stadium this morning when Mr Michael Palmer, Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, arrived on a handcycle to greet the participants.
Leading a contingent of technical officials, Mr Palmer handcycled in to the applause of the athletes and a cheer performance by Temasek Polytechnic. This was Palmer’s first try at the handcycle, a sport that demands heavy use of arm muscles.
Addressing the athletes, who came from schools and associations ranging from 7 years old to 78 years old, Mr Palmer emphasized the growing emphasis of disability sports as Singapore journeys to become a recognized sports hub.
Mr Palmer also revealed that longest supporter of disability sports – JPMorgan Chase – has stepped up on its commitment from this year onwards to extend beyond the National Track and Field Championship. The Junior Athletics Development Programme was officially launched during the ceremony to introduce to the various schools and associations present on track and field activities they can now actively participate in under JPMorgan’s support.
As current inter-school national championships do not include opportunities for the disabled to participate in, the National Track and Field Championship provides an opportunity every year for athletes to get to know their strengths and weaknesses. JPMorgan Chase has been loyally supporting this event since the Council’s inception in 1973.
The Junior Athletics Development Programme aims to allow even more disabled especially the youths to have opportunities to participate in track and field through outreach activities islandwide throughout Singapore.
The National Track and Field Championship 2007 will continue its second and final day at Serangoon Stadium on 28 July.
