Swimmers win Singapore 9 medals at Japan Paralympic Swimming Championships 2007

MEDIA RELEASE
20 August 2007

Swimmers with disability - Theresa Goh Rui Si, Yip Pin Xiu, Ng Xiu Zhen and James Leow Chen Hai - will return to Singapore from Osaka, Japan, tonight, with 9 medals under their belt.

Theresa Goh Rui Si not only won the gold medals for 50m Butterfly (S5), 100m Breaststroke (SB4) and 200m Individual Medley (SM5), but she has also broken the meet records for all three events. She also returns with a silver medal in 200m Freestyle (S5).

In December 2006, Theresa won the championship title for 200m Individual Medley (SM5) at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Swimming Championship 2006, which earned Singapore its second slot at Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. She is on track for her road to Beijing as she again rewrites her personal best for the event.

15-year-old Yip Pin Xiu, youngest swimmer in the team, was re-classified to the S3 category at this championship, noting the decreasing functionality of her physique. However, she continued to score a gold medal in 100m Freestyle (S3), a personal best in 200m Freestyle (S3) and both in 50m Back (S3).

Ng Xiu Zhen returns with 2 bronze medals in 50m and 100m Freestyle (S7). James Leow, who rewrote five out of six personal bests at the 21st International German Championships 2007, did not manage to return with any personal bests this time.

The swimmers will return to Singapore tonight at Changi Airport Terminal 2, 10.30 pm, on flight SQ621, from Osaka, Japan.

About Classification

All athletes with disability undergo classification when they attend international competitions, which test their physical functionality to ensure that they only compete with athletes who are similar in their functionality. This helps the athletes to compete under fair and just conditions.

For example, a visually impaired (otherwise fully functional physically) swimmer will not compete with an amputee swimmer.

In swimming, the lower the classification is, the less physical functionality the swimmer has.
