Firdaus Bin Nordin scores 2 golds at Japan Paralympic Athletics Champ 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
22 October 2007

19-year-old Muhammad Firdaus Bin Nordin will be returning to Singapore tonight with 2 gold medals from the Japan Paralympic Athletic Championship 2007.

With a marked steadiness in his performance, Firdaus is on track in his preparations for the ASEAN Para Games and Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. The ASEAN Para Games, equivalent of the SEA Games, will be held in Korat, Thailand, from 17 to 27 January 2008, while the Beijing Paralympic Games, equivalent of the Olympic Games, will be held in Beijing, China, from 6 September 2008. Firdaus was the first Singaporean to earn a qualifying slot for Beijing 2008 when he won silver for the T53 200m event at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championship 2006.

2008 will be Firdaus’ first attempt at the Paralympic Games. That is expected to be a most exciting period for Singapore, if Firdaus can keep up his strong performance. Despite the difficulties he has been facing in his racing wheelchair of three years, Firdaus has been working hard to attain his objectives for each competition. The inevitable wear-and-tear from constant practice and also, several crashes from other competitors during competitions, have almost rendered his wheelchair totally unusable. The Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) has been negotiating with a potential sponsor to, hopefully, fund a new racing wheelchair for the soon-to-be Paralympian to perform his best next year.

“We are grateful for the donors who have or are beginning to recognize the sporting potential and talent of people with disability. But we definitely need more to come forward to support others like Firdaus. These are our homegrown Singaporeans who have overcome physical and mental challenges to achieve what an able-bodied person can. There are many others out there whom we can do our bit to help,” said Mr Kevin Wong, Executive Director of SDSC.

Firdaus will return to Singapore tonight with his coach, Mr Jaffa Bin Salleh, at Changi Airport Terminal 2, 10.30 pm, on flight SQ621, from Osaka, Japan. For interviews or more information, please contact Kelly Fan at 6342 3503 / 9007 8669 or email .
