6 April 2008
Singapore swimmer Yip Pin Xiu rewrote the world record in the 50m Backstroke (S3) with a timing of 01:00:80, during the US Paralympics Swimming Trials 2008 being held in Minneapolis, USA.
Yip managed to break the decade-long record during the heats of this event with a timing of 01:01:55. However, her appetite for success did not stop there. She went one better by clocking 01:00:80 en-route to her second record-breaking swim in one day.
The exuberant teenage swimming prodigy was clearly ecstatic by her world record setting ways, “I did not expect to break the record this early yet. I am thrilled about breaking a 11-year old record.”
Ng Xiu Zhen clocked her personal best timing of 08:21:38 in the 400m Freestyle (S7), an improvement from her previous best of 08:23:54.
Yip and Ng will be returning to Singapore along with teammates Theresa Goh and James Leow, on 8 April 2008, UA 895, touching down in Terminal 3 at 11:35pm.
