Goh overtaken by strong contenders in Water Cube

For Immediate Release
12 September 2008

Tears fell unashamedly as Theresa Goh Rui Si finished in fourth placing at the 100m Breaststroke (SB4) finals this evening.

Despite the small number of Singaporeans at the Water Cube, the group drew quite a number of stares with their ear-piercing shouts for Goh as she glided in the waters during the race. Amidst the cheers of “Theresa, go!” and “Go, Singapore!”, Goh finished the first lap heading ahead of her competitors, and Bela Hlavackova tight on her heels. But things were soon changed after the turn at 50m. Hlavackova and Isreal’s Inbal Pezaro caught up with Goh near the 75m mark and overtook her at a surprising speed. It then became a close-shaved race between Maria Teresa Perales and Goh, with many hearts pumping furiously for Goh’s victory. But the dream was shattered when Goh came in 74 milliseconds behind Perales - less than a second’s difference - marring the perfect ending to Goh’s eight years of training for today.

Words of comfort flowed in continually from family, friends, volunteers and even reporters and photographers to Goh for her loss. The Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC) would like to thank all who have been supporting Goh for her journey and pursuit for the nation. The SNPC is proud of Goh’s efforts and strong will.

Goh is well and will be taking resuming training tomorrow for her last event to be held next Monday, 15th September 2008 - the 50m Freestyle (S5) heats at 10.04 am.
