FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
11 March 2007
0.05 seconds. That’s how close Singapore’s golden girl, Theresa Goh, was from breaking the 50m Breaststroke (SB4) world record during the Telkom South Africa (SA) National Aquatic Championship last April. Less than a year later, Theresa brings home the long-awaited record by shaving off almost 1 second off her personal best.
Within seven months from her world record feat at the 2006 U.S. Paralympics (200m Breaststroke – SB4), Theresa has earned 1 world championship title in the 200m Individual Medley (SM5) event at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Swimming Championships 2006 and, only just, 1 more world record in 50m Breaststroke (SB4) at the Danish Open 2007.
Held from 9 to 11 March at Esbjerg, Denmark, the Danish Open is open to swimmers with a disability all over the world. 38 clubs from 20 countries, including China, Great Britain, Hungary and Germany, have sent 195 swimmers to this championship.
In her category, Theresa did not face strong competition, but her battle lay against herself as she fought to overcome a loss which was missed by merely 0.05 seconds less than a year ago.
In the evening today, Theresa finally got the last laugh, as she sent a brief SMS back: “Yay! I broke the world record!”, informing of her second world record for Singapore. Her new timing of 53.60s clearly supercedes the previous world record of 54.19s, which was set by Olena Akopyan of Ukraine in 2002. This is more than just a fingernail’s difference, which was the difference of her timing last April, when she missed the world record by 0.05 seconds. That had been a regret hanging on Theresa’s mind until today.
This Tuesday night, Theresa will return with coach Jiao Yang to celebrate her victory with the rest of Singapore, including her family and head coach Ang Peng Siong. The Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) sincerely invites you and all Singaporeans to join us in welcoming our local pride and joy back at Changi Terminal One.
