He has always been interested in swimming. Despite being almost totally blind, he persevered in his interest and did Singapore proud when he won the 100-metre freestyle in the 2005 ASEAN Paralympics. His efforts have also won him the Sportsman Merit Award in 2000 and 2003, and also the Prestigious Sportsman of the Year in 2002.
He has struggled a lot in his quest to become a good swimmer, in ways such as needing to count the number of strokes to know if he is reaching the end of the pool. However the years of difficulty have taught him an important lesson: “See your struggles as great achievements. If it’s worth achieving, it’s worth struggling over.”
With this in mind, he is now Dr Wong Meng Ee, a Ph.D graduate in Sociology, Philosophy and Japanese Studies from the University of Cambridge, and a swimmer extraordinaire.
