Love Through SDSC

By Zhang Yulei

In this month of loving and bonding, we wanted to bring you dramatic love stories that took place in foreign countries, schools full of rich students or even the palace. But after watching so many melodramas and idol series, we decided to take a look at some of the simple yet romantic stories that may, or will, happen to each of us instead. And interestingly, we found the stories to be right here in SDSC’s sports programmes.

Lets start off with our first couple He Shiyi and Chua Boon Joon.

How did the 2 of you meet?
We met in a very mundane setting --- in the office. We used to work together previously and that is where the love blossomed between us.

Both of you choose to volunteer at SDSC, why SDSC? Did SDSC cultivate any similar interest among the 2 of you?
We were looking to do our bit to the community at large and were looking for an opportunity/organisation to volunteer with. My hubby got to know of one event from SDSC through the Singapore International Foundation Youth Expedition Project (SIF YEP) and that is where we started our relationship with SDSC.

After participating in the first activity, which I remember as the Sailability Conference, we went on to join in as many of SDSC’s events as we could since we got to know the staff and volunteers there. We also found that raising public awareness to the fact that the handicapped are just as capable, if not more so than the able bodied, is something very worthwhile. We got to learn much more regarding disabilities and how the disabled are able to lead a normal life.

Were there any romantic moments while volunteering?
Well, in our own sweet definition, there was definitely romance between us when we volunteered. We enjoyed the presence of each other during our volunteering for the events and, of course, making sure that each of us was doing our utmost in executing the roles and responsibilities. I guess we were keeping an eye out for each other, in case the other needed help, since we could understand each other much more easily as a couple.

What did you do this Valentine’s Day?
We spent a nice quiet evening at home on that day. However, we did have a pleasant dinner at a Japanese restaurant the day before Valentine’s Day so as to avoid the crowd.

What are your wishes for love on Valentine's day this year?
We do wish everyone to be able to find their love. And for those out there who have already found it, treasure your loved ones. Express your love to them everyday, not necessarily only on Valentine’s Day.

I may not be a love expert, but I believe that many couples do have this problem: Where should we go today, darling? If going out to Orchard Road is way out of budget, why not consider doing some volunteering job? I feel it is really a good way to get to know each other better because that is the time when one shows his or her true self rather then letting him coat you with his or her lies (which may be true at times.)

Our second couple here, Tan Seow Min and Richard Lau Swee Koon got to know each other through SDSC's sports programmes.

How did the 2 of you meet?
Richard (R): At Changi Sailing Club, I was one of the volunteers for SDSC when I first met her. She looked cool with her sunglasses on.
Seow Min (S): I didn’t take much notice of him at first but heard quite a bit from fellow sailors.

Did SDSC help you in strengthening your relationship?
R: To a certain extent.
S: SDSC helped in bringing two of us together through the sailing and volunteer program which otherwise, we might not have met each other.

Were there any romantic moments while you were volunteering for SDSC?
R: Not much at this point of time because Seow Min is training with the elite squad. We went for a few sailing competitions together and that was how we got to know more about each other.
S: Not much too, as we usually concentrate on our duties during the weekend trainings.

What did you do this Valentine's Day?
R: This is my first time giving a gift on Valentine's Day. So I bought her a Minnie Mouse (her favourite soft toy) and also a bouquet of pink roses and I sent them to her office. At night we went to have our dinner at a Hong Kong-style cafe.
S: Nothing very fancy. We had a simple dinner and a stroll after the dinner.

What are your wishes for love on valentine's day this year?
Both: A strong and steady relationship.

We are meeting new people almost every day. Who knows, Cupid may already have shot an arrow at us and tada… we will fall in love with the next guy (or girl) we see. Of course, meeting someone we like is relatively easier than being able to interact and stay together till death do us part. Having a common interest would definitely make things easier. Why not look for that common interest while doing a good cause?
