If you have visited the Handicap Welfare Association (HWA) recently, you would have noticed a wonderfully-furnished pool lounge, courtesy of a community service project by students from Singapore Management University (SMU). This new pool lounge was officially opened with a tournament for physically challenged individuals on 10 March 2007.
The SMU team had aimed to create a focal point where the young and the elderly would be able to freely interact. In addition, the team wanted to provide ample opportunity for the physically challenged to engage in rehabilitation exercises through a new and innovative method.
The team spent several weeks promoting and introducing the game to participants and also facilitated many training sessions. Finally, a pool tournament was held to provide the newly groomed sharpshooters a chance to pit their skills in a very interactive environment.
The participants and organizers found the event both inspiring and exhilarating.
When asked to elaborate on his experience with the physically challenged, Jasbir Singh, one of the SMU project members, cheerfully replied, “They are much more able than us mentally. When you see how motivated they are to live normally, you think your problems are nothing.”
Amos Siow, another member of the team, gave his opinion on how the physically challenged should be viewed in society, “We should treat them with equal status. Working with them is a privilege and an honour”.
Mohd. Taufik, who was one of the physically challenged participants, felt especially delighted by the whole event. “I am very glad that they introduced (this) for the disabled to play.”
If you'd like to know what the excitement is all about, why not drop by the Handicap Welfare Association today and have a go and the new pool lounge? HWA sincerely welcomes people with disabilities to join its programmes and services, as well as to embark on more projects that benefit the members.
