Most people are aware that taking enough amounts of vitamins is an important part of keeping healthy. Vitamins can also enable many athletes to boost their performances. However, not many are aware that overdosing on vitamins can cause undesirable effects. The following are just a few examples.
Vitamin A
The Good: Vitamin A can be easily obtained from milk or oysters. It promotes growth and improves vision.
The Bad: However, when the consumption level exceeds 1000 RE (retinal equivalents), it can result in joint pain, hair loss, dry skin and fatigue.
Vitamin D
The Good: Vitamin D strengthens bones and teeth, and maintains muscle and nerve functions. It is readily available from fish with small bones and prawns.
The Bad: However, too much vitamin D can lead to nausea, constipation, bone pain and weight loss. It can also cause kidney stones.
Vitamin B6
The Good: Vitamin B6 is required to produce hormones and haemoglobin, and to maintain nervous system functions. It can be obtained from bananas, avocadoes, beef, chicken, fish and leafy greens.
The Bad: However, vitamin B6 can be toxic to the nervous system and cause impaired walking and numbness if too much is consumed.
Now knowing the perils of overdosing on vitamins, we should always remember to eat, or to supplement our diet in moderation.
