Jovin Tan and Yip Pin Xiu visits Montfort Secondary School’s Track and Field Meet to lead its Mass Participation Challenge
1, 2, 3, 4, 5…More and more people were walking up to Yip Pin Xiu and Jovin Tan to shake their hands, and to confide how they felt inspired by the two young athletes’ fearless approach to adversity.
This wasn’t any ordinary meet-and-greet session, but an occasion which meant much more to the two athletes. Pin Xiu and Jovin were being invited to lead the Mass Participation Challenge of Montfort Secondary School’s annual track and field meet. The Mass Participation Challenge was a traditional walk around the stadium track together with all the students and staff of the school, to foster team spirit and active participation of everyone.
The invitation was important to Jovin and Pin Xiu. It signified a day where all their hard work over the past years had paid off. They were there not because they were inspirational individuals who had overcome adversities. On that day, they were there because they were inspirational ATHLETES. They were on an equal standing as all the other young athletes present.
Besides their warm hospitality, the Montfortian students, teachers and parents went a step further to demonstrate their support for disability sports as they collected donations for SDSC during the track and field meet. Within a short span of a few hours, the school collected $1123.38 for the Live That Dream fund, to help fund the training and competition needs of athletes with disability.
When the meet finally ended amidst the singing of “Oh oh oh oh oh… Montfortians…catch us if you can”, there could not have been a better finale. Indeed, Montfort’s enthusiasm towards and recognition of athletes with disability may be way ahead of many other local educational institutions now. Perhaps in time to come and more partnerships taking place, many more will catch up and together, we can foster a society where opportunities are not denied to anyone.
