Registration for Boccia Workshop opens

By Magdeline Lee

What is Boccia?
Boccia is a sport that is specially designed to cater to athletes with severe disability. It is played by people with cerebral palsy and other locomotor disabilities that affect one’s motor skills. The aim of boccia is to throw leather balls as close to a white target ball or better known as jack. Firstly, the jack is thrown. Subsequently, each player or team take turns to throw their balls towards the jack. A referee will measure the distance between the ball and the jack and award points accordingly. And of course, the team or player with the highest score wins the game!

Boccia is a fast growing sport in Singapore. As boccia requires precision and strategization, and not physically undemanding, it is also currently being developed into a community sport which can be enjoyed by the elderly and the young.

The First Boccia Workshops in Singapore
A few highlights of SDSC’s SDSC Calendar of events in July are the first Boccia workshops in Singapore, to be held in conjunction with the 1st Singapore Boccia Invitational Open. Through three different workshops, SDSC seek to provide an opportunity to allow more people from the local and regional communities to learn about Boccia and help provide inclusive sporting activities which can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.
The three workshops to be conducted are:
- Coaching workshop (17 – 18 July 2007)
- Refereeing workshop (18 – 22 July 2007)
- Classification workshop (17 – 19 July 2007)

SDSC is delighted to have Ms Helena Bastos and Ms Leslie Halicki conduct the coaching and refereeing workshops. Ms Helena Bastos is the delegate responsible for technical matters and officials for the Cerebral Palsy International Sports & Recreation Association (CPISRA). She is also the coach of the Portugal Boccia team. Ms Leslie Halicki holds the position of secretary and delegate responsible for the officials in CPISRA. Both speakers are IBC recognised International Referee Accreditors.
