1. The word golf comes from the Dutch kolf, meaning stick, club or bat.

2. The most ancient golf course in the world is The Old Links at Musselburgh Racecourse. Evidence has shown that golf was played there in 1672.

3. Tiger Woods began playing golf at the age of two. In 1984, when he was eight, he won the 9–10 boys’ event, the youngest age group available, at the Junior World Golf Championships. Woods went on to win the Junior World Championships six times, including four consecutive wins from 1988 to 1991.

4. According to National Golf Foundation, there are about 775,000 girls, aged 12 to 17, playing golf today. The figure has more than doubled, compared to 328, 000 in 1998.

5. The women’s golf system is quite different from the men’s. Many events for women are played over 3 rounds (54 holes), while the standard length of men’s tournaments is 4 rounds (72 holes).

6. There are five principal tours for women, namely the PGA Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour. The most prestigious of these is the U.S.-based LPGA Tour.

7. The outstanding golfer, Michelle Wie, at the age of 15, was the youngest and the first female to make the cut for the USGA championship, which is generally played by males, at Pittsburgh sectional for the 2005 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

8. For all female golfers out there, here’s a magazine you would not want to miss out on – Golfer Girl Magazine! This magazine, which was recently launched in spring 2007, is tailored especially for female youth golfers. It includes golf instructions, history of women’s golf, tournament schedules, as well as sensational interviews with top junior and female tournament players, and women who work in the golf industry, like golf course architects.

9. As many of you know, golf handicap shows how well an amateur golfer plays, and is derived from the total net score from the number of strokes actually played.
10. To aid disabled golfers in their playing, many devices, such as golf clubs, specially made for easy transportation, and gripping aids are available. There are also other automated equipments to help them retrieve balls, etc.

11. In 2004, a blind female golfer, Jan Dinsdale, shot a hole-in-one on the 115 yard second hole at a golf club in Britain. In fact, this was the very first hole-in-one that was scored by a visually impaired golfer.

12. The first blind person known to play golf was Clint Russel, in the 1920s. After much practice, he shot an 84 for 18 holes in the 1930s.
