48th Interschool Swimming Meet

By Yip Pin Xiu

On the Wednesday of 11 July, 8 swimmers took part in the 48th National Inter-school Swimming Championship. It was our second time participating in an event for able-bodied athletes. When I stepped into the venue, I was taken aback to see the participating schools seated neatly and cheering enthusiastically for their teams. I could feel the strong ambience in the swimming complex. Although most of the audience did not know us, they cheered for us when we were swimming. We were really encouraged by their relentless support.

I felt honoured to be invited for this event as an athlete. I felt as if I was finally being ‘recognised’ as a professional athlete after years of hard training. Moreover, I felt home throughout the event; we could easily connect to one another as though we had known one another for a long time. My knowledge on competitions has definitely enriched through this event by meeting people and exchanging tips. It was a memorable lesson for us.

Overall, this trip to the pool was a fulfilling experience and some of us even attained personal bests! Most importantly, we had a lot of fun putting in hard work together.

We sincerely thank the organizers of the 48th Interschool Swimming Meet 2007 for inviting the swimmers to participate in the demonstration event for the second year running.

Hopefully, in the near future, we can take a step closer towards inclusion with collaboration between events for the disabled and the able-bodied, allowing swimmers like Pin Xiu to compete amidst the applause of our local crowds.
