On 25 July 2007, Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) was awarded the Bronze Award under the Sports Business category at the Sporting Inspiration Awards. Since 2001, APL Logistics/ Neptune Orient Lines has been contributing to Sailability Singapore to facilitate sailing programmes for the disabled through its “Beyond Boundaries” Trust Fund. Not only has APL/NOL sponsored the ‘hardware’ by supplying boats and financial help for disabled sailors, APL/NOL employees also provided ‘heartware’ by volunteering to ferry disabled athletes to and fro training every weekend, helping the to rig their boats and transferring them to and fro their boats.
APL/NOL has helped Sailability Singapore to grow so rapidly that Singapore managed to donate two boats to Philippines in 2005 to promote sailing to disabled youths in other countries. Moreover, with their support, The International Federation for Disabled Sailing (IFDS) – Young Enabled Sailors (YES) Asia Conference was successfully held in Singapore in 2005. In 2006, Singapore set up the ASEAN Disability Sailing Federation to promote sailing excellence in the ASEAN region, with the alliance of all ten ASEAN countries.
With APL/NOL’s support, disabled sailors have also made waves in the international sailing arena. During the 9th FESPIC Games in 2006 (equivalent of the Asian Games), all members of the sailing team who represented Singapore returned with a medal each, with Jovin Tan and Desiree Lim scoring gold for theirs, despite strong competition from China, Australia and New Zealand.
SDSC likes to thank APL/NOL for their unwavering support for Sailability Singapore. Congratulations to a well-earned award!
