Hwa Chong Institute team completes 1st charity golf tournament fully organized by students!

Reported by Project Wings team (Hwa Chong Institute)

On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon, the Project Wings inaugural golf tournament was held at The Warren Golf & Country Club, located in Choa Chu Kang. Tee Off! For The Disabled was a small tournament consisting of 40 players, and approximately $5,000 was raised from the event to aid SDSC in its sports programmes.

Project Wings (consisting of team leader Stanley Tan, Chong Lingxiu, Chong Lingying and Nicole Chua), is a long-term student project that was launched this year by a group of 4 Hwa Chong Institution (College) students. They seek to raise funds and spread awareness for the SDSC in their project, using sports as a means to do so. Tee Off! For The Disabled is the first sporting event they have organized, over a planning period of 8 months. It is also the first time that 4 JC students have been able to accomplish such a feat in Singapore.

They began this project inspired by the perseverance and sportsmanship displayed by disabled athletes. They wish to spread the spirit of celebrating and cherishing sports for all, as well as supporting disability sports.

Organizing this tournament has been a rewarding experience for the Project Wings team. “At a point in time, we weren’t even sure if this fundraiser was going to kick off,” admits Nicole. They have faced numerous challenges – lack of experience, credibility and time amongst other things. Regardless, they have managed to pull through and it is no mean feat that the golf tournament went successfully. Participating golfers, including the Hwa Chong Alumni, were impressed with the drive and enthusiasm of the young organizers.

The team would like to express their sincerest gratitude to all who have helped them along the way – especially their sponsors and the tournament players. “We’re glad that the event has been a success, but this isn’t the end yet,” says Lingying. There is a bright future ahead for Project Wings 2008, and they are looking forward to the new challenges and successes to come.
