Back in February this year, the SDSC, together with triathlon family - Trizen - and Ironman organizers - HiTri, held a briefing for athletes with disability regarding interest in joining the Ironman 70.3 Singapore. And the very first athletes who signed up were the athletes with hearing impairment.
These same bunch of athletes has since been training faithfully every week in running, cycling and swimming, together with a group of kind volunteers from Trizen that aims to enable challenged athletes to fulfil their sporting aspirations.
It has not been an easy task, having to buff up everyone’s fitness, syncronise group trainings and even communicating. Although some of the athletes wear hearing aids, most still require basic sign language to understand what’s going on.
However, after six months of devoted training, the athletes are now prepared to face their biggest challenge - the full Ironman 70.3 Singapore. And on this Sunday, we will be seeing the fruits of their hard work. We wish the deaf athletes the best in pursuing their targets, and also, remind everyone to be careful on the roads as they might not be able to hear your car coming. Thank you for playing your part!
