Ben Loh and Ong Hui Hui

The opening of the 4th National Disability League 2009 was held at SAFRA Tampines Orchid Bowl and was graced by Ms Jessica Tan, Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC.
The League kicked off with the first rounds of bowling (singles). To date, 807 registrations have been received for the league in total. Entries are still open for the various sports due to overwhelming responses.
The high participation strongly signifies the increasing number of persons with disabilities who are keen in taking up sports and it also confirms the proven popularity of this league structure.
What is the action inside NDL 2009?

For the first time, SDSC opened the doors to the students with intellectual disability for NDL Boccia and NDL Archery. We received encouraging feedback from APSN schools requesting for more opportunities to allow their students participating in other events such as Shooting and Wheelchair Basketball.

In the previous years, we used to hold the events at the same day for all people with disabilities but now, the events were separated to meet the high participation criteria. For instance, NDL Bowling saw 211 bowlers registering for the Singles and Doubles. It also led to a huge success at NDL Badminton that drew 145 shuttlers for the Singles and Doubles. Do you know that NDL Futsal has broken a new record? 36 teams (216 footballers) from all walks of life like visual-impairment, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability and hearing-impairment, would complete in 76 futsal matches for two days.

To encourage integration between able-bodied and persons with disability, with the support of Wheelchair Basketball Association, we are heartened to know that AWWA TEACH ME Services, Singapore Association for the Deaf and Wheel Power from Ngee Ann Polytechnic have pledged their support to wheel with the basketball for the first time!

There will be another exciting and very new event, Powerchair Football that will take place at Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall on 18 July 2009. Six teams from MDAS and AWWA TEACH ME Services will battle for the top 3 spots. You are invited to witness the unique sport and all the matches will kick off at 6.00pm and end by 9.00pm.

Finally, look out for more news on the upcoming NDL events: Handcycling, Lawn Bowls and Sailing that are already in the pipeline this month and August.
