How does selection work?

A series of selection trials has been held since July 2007 to select only the most outstanding as Singapore’s representatives in this prestigious event.

Selection trials for the 4th ASEAN Para Games include:
- National Track and Field Championship 2007
- National Swimming Championship 2007
- National Disability League 2007
- Athletics Selection Trial (September 2007)

Results in these trials will be recorded and compared to the results of previous ASEAN Para Games. Athletes are automatically qualified for the Games if you obtain results similar to or better than the 6th place timing/scores of the previous ASEAN Para Games.

Athletes who have yet to attain such a performance may also be recommended to the Selection Committee for consideration, but however, subjected to an evaluation based on attendance, past performances and potential. You may read more about the selection criteria below.

What criteria does SDSC use to select athletes?

For sports that are measurable in timings, distance, scores, mark etc
You will be considered for selection if:

* the sport/event you are interested to join has your disability category

* you can achieve at least 6th place timing/results of the relevant event in the previous ASEAN Para Games

* you miss the qualifying standard marginally but show potential to equal or surpass it in time for the Games

* you have other credible sporting achievements at accredited championships or competitions

For sports with no quantifiable results or measurable timings (i.e. WC basketball, lawnbowls, WC tennis, soccer)
You will be considered for selection if:

* the sport/event you are interested to join has your disability category

* you have credible comparative results achieved in the past 1 year

Besides the criteria as stated above, the following criteria will also be used for selection:

  • Attitude and behavior

  • Current skill level and fitness

  • Level of commitment and attendance

  • Potential for future development

  • Ability to demonstrate team spirit and work well with team mates

The selectors may at their discretion give consideration to extenuating circumstances. For this purpose, “extenuating circumstances” mean an inability of the athlete to compete in and/or attend event, training camps or other required attendances arising from:
  • Injury or illness

  • Equipment failure

  • Travel delays

  • Bereavement

  • Such other circumstances as the selectors may consider to be relevant

What happens after I am selected?

You must:

  • Be committed to train regularly;

  • Fulfill all other requirements/code of code deemed necessary by SDSC.

[Back to FAQ]

How do I appeal if I am not selected?

An athlete may only appeal to the Selection Appeals Committee if he or she has not been selected by the Selection Committee.

An athlete who is not selected after any of the Selection Trials may appeal that decision to the Selection Appeal Committee if there are supporting details to justify inclusion.

All appeals must be lodged with the Executive Director of the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) using the Appeal Form within 3 working days of the notification of the decision by the Selection Committee.

The Appeal Form must be accompanied by an appeal fee to SDSC for the costs of the appeal, which sum will only be refunded if the appeal is successful. ( S$100 for sports with quantifiable results/timings; S$300 for sports without quantifiable results/timings)

Download the Appeal Flowchart to know more about how an appeal for inclusion works.

Can I withdraw from the contingent if I am selected?

The responsibility is on the athlete to give serious thought to his or her acceptance of the letter of selection. The athlete must be transparent and honest in communicating, to the Council, any impending issues that may adversely affect participation in the competition that he or she is selected for.

An athlete who has accepted the letter of selection may only withdraw from the selection for the following reasons: -

  • Injury sustained during training/accident (certified by a medical doctor);

  • Sudden illness (certified by a medical doctor);

  • Compassionate grounds (e.g. bereavement of a relative, spouse/child is hospitalized, etc);

  • Examinations/work attachments (verified by school /employer); or

  • Other unexpected life events that may affect the focus and morale of the athlete.

Should an athlete withdraw from the team without a valid and acceptable reason within 1 month prior to the contingent’s departure, he is liable to SDSC for the reimbursement of any costs incurred during the preparations for the competition.
