“Speed Racer” – Charity Film Premiere

GV Vivocity, Singapore
6 May 2008

From Larry and Andy Wachowski, creators of the groundbreaking “Matrix” trilogy, and producer Joel Silver comes the high-octane adventure “Speed Racer.”

Hurtling down the track, careening around and over the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel.  Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless.

Loyal to the family racing business, led by Pops Racer (John Goodman), who also designed Speed’s thundering Mach 5, Speed turns down a lucrative offer from Royalton Industries and infuriates the maniacal owner (Roger Allam). He also discovers that some of the biggest races are being fixed by ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers.  If Speed won’t drive for Royalton, Mach 5 might never cross another finish line.

The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game.  With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother’s life: the death-defying rally known as The Crucible.

Based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida, the live-action “Speed Racer” will showcase revolutionary visual effects and cutting-edge storytelling that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowski brothers’ films.

Why you should support this premiere
In 2008, with the rising fervour in racing and sports created by the Formula1 Grand Prix as well as the Beijing 2008 Olympics/Paralympics, the SDSC decided to spice up our fundraising efforts with the inception of the “Speed Racer” Charity Gala Premiere – an extraordinary movie that is set to raise the temperature in our local theatres come this summer.

Partnering Golden Village Cinemas, the sole distributor of “Speed Racer” in Singapore, we will be leveraging on this premiere to raise funds for the sustenance of our sports programmes and services catered for the needs of people with disability. Undertaking all the three roles – Singapore Sports Council, Singapore National Olympic Council and National Sports Associations – in one, the SDSC is the sole body in Singapore that is helping people across all types of disability to earn the opportunity to play sports.

And through our work, we know that sports are not just channels to rest the mind or another diet means for a person with disability. It is about gaining strength in mind, body and spirit. It is about enabling them to learn that they too are as capable as anyone else and gain the courage to step out into our society.

There are many whom we have met on our journey to help people with disability lead full and independent lives. However, the SDSC remains a charity, funded partially by the Singapore Sports Council. With its limited resources and shortage in funds of over a million dollars each year, the SDSC can only help so many people.

But, with your support, we can help more Yip Pin Xius and Theresa Goh realize their potential and that “Disability Does Not Disqualify”.
