In September 2008, the heat is set to hit a new high in Beijing when elite athletes from all over the world get ready for the race of their lifetimes. Outstanding athletes specially selected through various vigorous trials shall meet for the ultimate showdown, which is held every four years – Paralympic Games, the pinnacle of sports competitons for people with physical disabilities.
And this time, Singapore is not only making an appearance, but actually has the potential to bring home the first Olympic gold medal from the Paralympic Games.
Till date, Singapore has garnered a credible 7 qualification spots for the Paralympic Games so far, 2 for Swimming, 1 for the Sailing Team, 2 for Equestrian and 2 for Athletics.
From as early as March 2008, SDSC will be embarking on a nine-month long advertising blitz for the Paralympic Games. The climax of this campaign will the Paralympic Roadshow where we aim to to spread the Paralympic message to locations islandwide, including the heartlands. Not only are the heartlanders encouraged to learn more about the Paralympics and Singapore’s representatives, they will also have opportunities to experience the exhilaration of disability sports as we bring in foreign Paralympic stars to exhibit their skills and share their stories of the journey.
We hope to hire a wheelchair accessible bus, branded with Paralympic awareness and star athletes, for the tour around the island. Each roadshow will be themed differently to increase their appeal, such as: children’s sports, contact sports, strategic sports, or wheelchair sports.
Not only that, to help cultivate a healthy lifestyle, fitness instructors and trainers will also be on site, to assist the heartlanders to try out different sports, as well as recommend suitable activities for the person.
Games and contests will also be held with professional emcees to raise the knowledge of the Paralympics. We also hope to invite celebrities and singers to join us at the last roadshow to voice their support for the local athletes.
