Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games

Beijing, China & Hong Kong (Equestrian)
6 to 19 September 2008

The Paralympics are elite sport events for athletes from six different disability groups. They emphasize, however, the participants’ athletic achievements rather than their disability. The movement has grown dramatically since its first days. The number of athletes participating in Summer Paralympic Games has increased from 400 athletes from 23 countries in Rome in 1960 to 3806 athletes from 136 countries in Athens in 2004.

In 2004, Singapore narrowly missed its first Paralympic medal, when Theresa Goh Rui Si came in fifth placing for the 100m Breaststroke (SB4) event.

Till date, Singapore has qualified for three events – swimming, athletes (wheelchair racing) and equestrian. More qualifications are expected as we draw closer. And this time, Singapore is not only making an appearance, but actually has the potential to bring home the first Olympic gold medal from the Paralympic Games.
