National Boccia Championship
The National Boccia Championship was only recently launched in 2005, in line with the Council’s strategic plans for 2005 to 2008 - to hold a championship for each sport to provide competition opportunities and improve the selection of talents.
Through this event, Boccia athletes get to compete against each other on a national level. Their skills are put to demanding tests and at the same time, each athlete gains rewarding competition experiences. This event also helps to raise awareness of Boccia as a disability sport.
National Disability League
The National Disability Games (NDG), involving 10 different sports, became the fourth multi-sports games for local athletes with disabilities since 2002.
However, after reviewing the positive results from holding this event, the Singapore Disability Sports Council has taken a step furthur towards enhancing the sporting experiences of the participants by converting this annual one-off event to a six-month league season.
The establishment of a league means that individual athletes and teams now get more chances to compete, as winning the league not longer involves winning one event, but accumulating the most points from good performances at every match.
By providing this prolonged competition platform, the athletes can gain more competition exposure and experiences, cross-learn with more competitors of different skill levels, test different strategies and improve their play with each match.
With the new incentives in place, the National Disability League will be even more eagerly-anticipated by athletes. It will also enable the Council to select more talented athletes with consistent performances and strengthen its elite athletes base.
SPH Foundation National Junior Swimming Championship
Youth involvement is in the heart of this championship. Both athletes under the Singapore Disability Sports Council’s junior athlete development programme and other students with a disability compete in this event.
Using this championship, the Council identifies and develops potential junior swimmers with a disability for the Singapore Sports School.
The best junior swimmers with a disability are selected to advance to a higher level of competition. Other potential youths are invited to join the national youth training regime.
National Swimming Championships
The Singapore Disability Sports Council’s (SDSC) National Swimming Championship helps to channel potential newcomers into the national elite training squad, as both newcomers and national athletes take part in the event. This is also an opportunity to select athletes for upcoming major international competitions.
