[Media Release] Corning Employees Cross Boundaries for Singapore Para Sports

Singapore, 5 February 2021 – Corning Singapore Holdings presented a donation of $19,426 to the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) as part of Corning’s month-long fundraising initiative ‘The Corning Well-Being Challenge” that concluded at the end of 2020. To keep their employees engaged despite the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘The Corning Wellness Challenge’ invited Corning employees to maintain both physical fitness and psychological wellbeing while fundraising for SDSC. In line with the challenge’s motto of “being well and doing well”, employees took part in a variety of wellness activities including weight-loss targets, physical exercise, cooking healthy meals for colleagues (“Wellness Pop-up Café”), arts and craft projects, a virtual mini concert and a “Wellness with SDSC” WebEx session. All activities helped to facilitate greater interaction between colleagues, family and friends. Corning employees based in the United States also joined in the challenge, proving that that the spirit of “being well and doing well” transcends geographical boundaries. “The Corning Wellness challenge is a great initiative that enabled our employees to engage in their own personal wellness activities in a safe manner. I am pleased to see the active participation and we hope this could provide an inspiring story for others to continue their support to the SDSC. We wish our para athletes every success in their sporting journey,” said Mr Ho Cheong Tong, General Manager, Corning International ASEAN region.“I found that committing to my goal of 12 miles per week and participating with fellow Corning colleagues gave me the extra motivation I needed to make exercise a priority and to get outside everyday” said Cheryl Capps, senior vice president and chief supply chain officer based in the United States. “This experience made a difference for me and I personally want to thank Corning ASEAN for providing this opportunity for myself, and other Corning employees, to focus on our own health while also making a difference for the SDSC” she added. As part of ‘The Corning Wellness Challenge’, para cyclist Steve Tee and para bowler Rex Tan helmed a virtual engagement with more than 50 Corning employees, as both para athletes shared about their sports journey and the values they have learned from sport. This is the third year in a row that Corning employees have rallied together to contribute to SDSC’s cause. In 2018, as part of OCBC Cycle 2018, a team of 21 Corning Singapore employees raised $6,500 for SDSC by completing innovative challenges during the event. In 2019, Corning employees went one step further through an internal fundraiser which saw Corning employees raise $15,528, that went towards enabling para athletes to participate in the OCBC Cycle 2019 and SDSC’s athletics development team. During the event, Corning employees rode alongside para athletes in a nod to inclusion. “We have been very worried about our beneficiaries being forgotten or side-stepped in this climate, where sport has been labelled as ‘non-essential’. Ironically, it is also through this climate that more people have started to realise how important physical activity is to our physical, mental and social well-being – benefits that we have continually tried to emphasise as “essential” for our beneficiaries. The strong support from the Corning family and their partners this year is thus a remarkable demonstration of their “wokeness”. We are crossing our fingers that this would help others step forward,” said Ms Kelly Fan, Executive Director, SDSC. Corning’s donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar under the One Team Singapore Fund administered by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Please download full media release from here.
