New SDSC leadership marks a new alliance to transform the lives of persons with disabilities through sport

A new board was elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) last Thursday evening (29 September 2022). The 12 individuals include familiar figures in para sport, including President of the Singapore National Paralympic Council, Dr Teo-Koh Sock Miang, and five-time Paralympic medalist Yip Pin Xiu, as well as new faces such as Ms Selina Foong, Chief Operating Officer of AWWA, and Dr Anthony Fok, Treasurer of APSN Education Services.

With the adoption of a revised constitution this year, the new board will take on a term of four years, from 2022 to 2026.

Dr Teo-Koh Sock Miang, SDSC Vice President from 2016-2020 and SDSC President from 2014-2016 and 2020-2022, was re-elected to serve a second consecutive term as President. Dr Teo-Koh, who has more than 30 years of social service organisation management and board governance, has a PhD in disability sports. She is also the President of the Singapore National Paralympic Council and Singapore Special Olympics, as well as a Justice of the Peace.

“I am humbled to be elected a second consecutive term, and given an opportunity to continue advocating for our para athletes and Singapore’s para sport vision. I am delighted with the composition of our new board, which gives us a strong alliance of social service agencies, para sports organisations and professionals. This alliance stands behind SDSC with a shared goal to transform the lives of persons with disabilities through sport. The newly elected Board is committed to continue developing SDSC’s programmes, initiatives, resources and partnerships to achieve SDSC’s vision and mission,” said Dr Teo-Koh.

Ms Angeline Peh, who was one of the integral figures leading SDSC to raise $500,000 for its programmes and services this August, was elected Vice President. An experienced finance and operations director, she previously served on the SDSC board as Assistant Treasurer in 2019 and 2020 before becoming the Honorary Treasurer from 2020 to 2022.

Ms Suzana Soo, principal of a SPED school operated by MINDS, is the board’s new Honorary Secretary, while Mr Gary Chong, Managing Director of ING Bank NV was elected Honorary Treasurer. Mrs Koh-Lim Ai Lay, principal of the Cerebal Palsy Alliance of Singapore, is the board’s new Assistant Treasurer.

The new board also comprises elected members Mr James Chia (Assistant Vice President, Sing Post Ltd, and President, Lawn Bowls Association for the Disabled Singapore) and Ms Florence Khemlani (President, Bowling Association for the Disabled Singapore), as well as appointed members Mr Patrick Wong (Regional Head, Business Audit Asia Pacific, Julius Baer) and Dr Leonard Lim (Consultant Sport Physician, Changi General Hospital).

Speaking of his new appointment, Mr Chia said, “I hope to bring in relevant experience and champion for the cause and welfare of athletes with disabilities in Singapore, in particular for inclusive and community sports.”
